Well, it was harder than hell to complete the list, and I do want feedback on this one! However, after starting with a list of what I thought were legitimate 80's one his wonders, I have the lists. The top ten (and a runner up) and the bottom ten (and the runner up). Here we go.
Top Ten 80's One Hit Wonder Songs
Runner up-Peter Cetera "The Glory Of Love" (Theme from Karate Kid)
What's a great countdown without the themes from the great movies of the eighties? A song that guys can like cause its associated with martial arts and a song girls can relate to for a man doing what he can for her? Pretty hard to beat.
Number 10-Men Without Hats "The Safety Dance"
One thing the 80's was known for was its silly-ass songs...and this one rates right up there. Gotta love a video with a maypole and several dwarves in it. Besides--if you friends don't dance, well their, no friends of mine...
Number 9-Crowded House "Don't Dream Its Over (Hey Now)"
A rather quiet song on the countdown, but a highly enjoyable one none the less. I'll be honest, I don't know shit about Crowded House...but I know that this song kicks ass!
Number 8-Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" (Theme from Dirty Dancing)
I know, I know...what the hell is wrong with Cody picking a song from a girlie movie at all, let alone Dirty Freakin' Dancing!? I don't know what is wrong with me either, but I love this song. Gets you moving and that dance number that goes with it? Wow, Patrick Swayze me to the moon!
Number 7-Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)" (Theme from the Breakfast Club)
If you've ever seen the Breakfast Club you know how great this song it. With the repetitious "don't, don't, don't, don't you forget about me..." Pretty good stuff here. A song about remembrance should be on any countdown, and here is the one for this list.
Number 6-Soft Cell "Tainted Love"
One Hit Wonder-(n.) Someone that makes a widely popular song and then disappears off the face of the planet. Does that describe Soft Cell or what? Wow. I bet even their own families were like "where the hell did they go?" after this song came out. What makes those background beats anyways? I love ya thought you hurt me so.
Number 5-Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round"
Now, I can't confess that I've even seen the video for this one. (If I have I don't remember it at all, which I guess isn't that big of a stretch) The song is perhaps best known now for being in the opening credits of The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Great tune! Watch out here I come!
Number 4-Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen"
It pains my heart to think that ol' Dexy gave up after this song. They had the material, they had the look...why didn't they start the Midnight Runners Fashion Company?! Talk about opportunity missed out on! Those overalls with the armpit hair? They were on a gold mine I tell ya, a gold mine.
Number 3-Irene Cara "What A Feeling" (Theme from Flashdance)
As it so happens, I have never seen the movie Flashdance. I know its one of the biggest movies from the eighties, but I've never watched it. What I do know is that when this song comes on the radio, I always get excited. It builds better than anything I have heard. It has the weak intro, the rising action and then BAM! WHAT A FEELING! Good stuff. Go listen if you don't know this one, or ask me for a copy, its worth it.
Number 2-Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me"
Oddly not a lot to say about this one. Again, in my infinite music wisdom, I know jack about Naked Eyes, except that this song is a real good one to think happy thoughts to. I remember using it for a slideshow in Spalding one time, and it really fits photos well. Great tune, but unfortunately only number two because there is no greater song than...
Number 1-a-Ha! "Take on Me"
Please note that the number one song is by a group powerful enough to start their own name with a lowercase letter. That's balls. Hailing from the great country of Norway, they burst upon the scene in the 80's with Take on Me, a catchy, haunting, dancy number that to this day is one of the best songs ever. Everyone that knows this song has tried to match lead singer's vocals at the end of each verse...in a day or twoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! While I almost didn't include them on this list since I know a few more songs by them, the average music person probably doesn't, so I kept them as a one hit wonder. Did I mention the video for this bad boy? Holy wowsa! Still one of the 10 best videos almost twenty years later. All around great song, and the best One Hit Wonder Song of the Eighties!
and now...equally important...
The Bottom Ten 80's One Hit Wonder Songs
Runner Up-Devo "Whip It"
Number 10-Lipps Inc. "Funkytown"
Number 9-Adam Ant "Goodie Two Shoes"
Number 8-Bobby McFerrin "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
Number 7-The Gap Band "Ride The White Pony"
Number 6-Cameo "Word Up"
Number 5-Gerardo "Rico Suave"
Number 4-Olivia Newton John "Physical"
Number 3-Toni Basil "Mickey"
Number 2-George Harrison "Got My Mind Set On You"
Number 1-The Tubes "Sports Fan"
There ya go...I await someone to at least voice an opinion on this...
It was fun, hope you enjoyed!
Later
In preparation for the list I am going to try to make, I came across this "story" on a website using a LOT of eighties lyrics. See how many you can identify!
Love in the EightiesI was working part time in a five and dime. My boss was Mr. Magee. He was sixfoot four and full of muscles and walked like an Egyptian, but I was happy tobe stuck with him. One manic Monday, while I was busy working for the weekend,I overheard him make a careless whisper. He told two of my co-workers, Jackand Diane, that I gave love a bad name. Well, I got so emotional, baby. I toldhim to say say say what he wants, but don't play games with my affection. Hetold me it was hard for him to say he's sorry and not to worry, to be happy. Then he blamed it on the rain. He was so out of touch. It just took my breathaway. I couldn't fight this feeling any longer. I asked him "What's love gotto do with it?" He told me to get outta his store and his dreams and into mycar. So I figured I might as well jump.I cut footloose, went home and called my girl, Jenny. (You already know thenumber.) She was on the other line with Amanda. They were talking about Mickeyand how he was so fine. That blew my mind! Was she really going out with him?I told her that I had just called to say I love her. She told me she had beensaving all her love for me, but now she was looking for a new love -hasta la vista, baby. I thought "I can't go for that - no can do! Bring me ahigher love!"I called up some of my old west end girls, hoping that one of them would wantto get physical all night long (all night). First I called Billie Jean - shetold me to beat it. I called Rosanna - her sister Christian blessed the rainsdown in Africa and then hung up on me. Come on, Eileen! ... no answer.Nobody told me there'd be days like these! I was feeling like the owner of alonely heart. Then, out of the blue, my best friend's girlfriend (she used to be mine)Roxanne calls. Yes, the real Roxanne. She told me she still hadn't foundwhat she's looking for and that she wanted to take on me. I said "I thoughtyou were Jessie's girl." She said "Don't you want me? You don't have to put onthe red light - I'm on my own." What a feeling! I had the eye of the tiger.Who was I f-f-f-foolin? Roxanne drove me crazy like no one else. She's abeauty! She blinded me with science, and weird science at that. There wasalways something there to remind me of her and I just knew that I'd have thetime of my life. I wasn't about to la-di-da-di.I jumped in my little red Corvette and rocked down to Electric Avenue. I gotmy mind set on her. When I got to her house (in the middle of her street) Iran. I rapped on her front door and to this rapper's delight, I heard a voicesay "Who can it be now?" "Here I am, the one that you love", I replied. I letmy love open the door and was immediately lost in her eyes. I felt like avirgin touched for the very first time. She loosened her blouse and said "Rockme Amadeus!" Well, I felt it was my prerogative to bust a move. I told her"I'll tumble for ya!" as I pinned her on the stairs, hungry like the wolf.Just then I felt an invisible touch on my shoulder. "Turn around bright eyes!"said a familiar voice. As I did, Jessie hit me with a sledgehammer of anuppercut that spun me right round like a record. He was hangin' tough andcontinued to roll with it, knocking the wind from beneath my wings - brokenwings by this time. He rocked me tonight, for old time's sake, beating me fromhead to toe, until my true colors were black and blue and blood was spillingfrom my mouth like red, red wine. "You don't owe me money for nothing!" hesnarled. At this point I was livin' on a prayer.I crawled back to my little red Corvette and drove home thinking about how mytainted love had cut like a knife - how it seems that every rose, truly, hasits thorn. No longer do I want to know what love is. Love stinks.
Well, time for an update I guess.
On Friday I received a phone call from Saline Area Schools (pronounced Celine, like the singer). They asked if I could come down for an interview on Monday at either 8:00 am or 3:45 pm. Of course I said yes, especially since I have no job now and nothing holding me back...or do I? My car has very little braking ability right now, so I asked Lindsay if she would let me use her car for the trip. She said sure, but she also added that she wanted to go with me. So it was Sunday at noon that we left the great city of Marquette. I had worked for 9 hours on Saturday updating and arranging and adding to my portfolios. Yes, sadly I had to increase to two portfolios due to me having so much shit.
*Total money spent on gas-20 dollars
The trip went well, we had at first thought to stay with Puffy, but didn't see him online the two nights before we left, so we decided to go to Karens to stay. She was more than happy to have us. I drove the UP and stopped in Indian River, with Lindsay driving the rest of the way.
*Total driving time thus far-7 hours
*Total money spent on gas-41 dollars
That night we watched TV and I spent the night studying the district online as well as brushing up on educational lingo and laws. I felt pretty prepared, and amazingly, I wasn't even nervous! For my first interview after college for a real job and I wasn't nervous. I was pretty impressed with myself, but eh, whatever. So I left pretty early and made it down to Saline with a while to go. I sat at McDonalds to waste time and drove around the city to get a feel for it. Well, as it turns out I got lost in the suburbs for about 20 minutes but made it out before the interview.
*Total driving time thus far-9.5 hours
The interview itself? Hmm, what to say. They started by telling me that out of 180 applicants, I was one of 12 that they were interviewing, so I guess that's a good start. One out of every 15 isn't bad eh? They told me about the position and asked me really specific questions. I told them more about how I teach and what I could bring to the program. Then it hit...the dreaded Michigan Benchmarks and Standards question. "Which of the Michigan Benchmarks and Standards do you feel is the most difficult to complete with middle schoolers?"
silence
crickets chirp
tumbleweeds passby
people leave to get popcorn
they go the bathroom
they return
"Well, I guess I would have to say Public Discourse and Speaking. I find that middle schoolers are shy and generally have a tough time discussing their thoughts and opinions to their classmates. You have the people that volunteer, the people that will speak when you call their name, and then the people that you have to say 'hey, get up there and give us what you got!'"
After going a bit more the interview (45 minutes) was over. They didn't even look at my portfolios which I just spent 10 dollars and 9 hours on. That's the bad news. The good news, is that they said they would be giving phone calls tonight on how you did. Either they say thank you, or you are one of two people that have to COME BACK to interview with the Superintendent. (the interview I was in had the principal, the ass. Principal, and three teachers). Sheesh. And we were planning on leaving as soon as I got back. Due to some traffic complications I was able to look at my bullshit answer I gave, and much to my delight I had correctly named one of the benchmarks. Much to my dismay, my detailed explanation didn't fit what I was describing.
Well on the way back I took a nice scenic route through downtown Ypsilanti. (If anyone tells you that this city is ugly--believe them...they are being honest.) I also "decided" to get lost in East Lansing on the return trip, but I did get to see ALL of MSU and a nice Hispanic family on some backroad suburbs I got caught in. Finally making it back to Karens, I relayed the interview to the girls.
*Total driving time thus far-12 hours
It wasn't long after that my phone rang. I answered and the girls were silent. It was the ass. principal saying that they decided to go with someone else with more experience...ah, the joys of being a teacher--can't get a job because you have no experience, can't get no experience without the job. He did say that I was warm and nice and overall I shouldn't change anything.
We decided to 'celebrate' by going to a pizza parlour on campus Ave by MSU. It was a sad day for me, but what can you do. At least I got some experience. Who knows, since we are going home in less than two weeks, its looking like I might be in Marquette after all.
Now let me tell you about the drive back to Marquette. We left around 830ish and wow was it a drive. Lindsay drove to Alma where we again got gas.
*Total money spent on gas thus far-62 dollars
She did the rest to St. Ignace and Then I took over. Good god. I hope none of you were on the road last night. REVENGE OF THE ANIMALS!!!
Lots of fog set an already scary atmosphere (we didn't get in the UP till after midnight anyway), but they were out...in numbers. We saw a deer here and a deer there for a long time and then it happened...coming out of a foggy patch, I hit something. Now this something depends on who you talk to. Lindsay said she thought it was something big like a dog, possibly a stray dog. I on the other hand swear that I hit a momma raccoon with the right wheel, a baby with the left, and two that went under the hood. Either way the car went
We saw at least 50 deer after that. They were seriously everywhere. In the ditch, in the streams, on the roads, in the grass. It was beyond crazy. Lindsay got so bad she was holding her breath with her mouth over her hand, eyes darting everywhich way. Then when she would see one she would get scared. I got us through it all though and ended out crazy adventure at 3:15 in the parking lot once again.
*Total money spent on gas thus far (projected once we fill up)-84 dollars
*Total driving time thus far-19 hours
A few comparisons for you...
Marquette to New York, New York-16.4 hours. 75 dollars gas
Marquette to Atlanta, Georgia-17 hours. 75 dollars gas
Marquette to Denver, Colorado-20 hours. 85 dollars gas
Marquette to anywhere else-A hell of a lot cheaper.
Oh well I guess it was a good experience for me. I can't thank Lindsay enough for going and driving as much as she did. Any questions feel free to ask me. Thanks for reading!
PS-what is the best one hit wonder song of the 80's? Hmm...stay tuned.
